Exactly the philosophy I had for most of the 35 years in my dental practice. When I began, I was intent on becoming "a world famous dentist." Lots of employees, lots of patients, LOTS of headaches. Changed my philosophy and practice style to one receptionist/office manager/insurance person, one dental assistant, and one dentist (me). I went to dental school to learn dentistry. Patients got to "the dentist" not the dentist's employees. I did all the exams, cleanings, and the restorative/surgical proceedures with the help of my employees. I personally saw every patient. I ran on time and saw patients one-at-a-time. I used my profits to provide care to people that couldn't afford to get dental care. And they received the exact same quality of care, and the exact same gold crowns, porcelain/gold crowns, partial and full dentures and implants as those who were paying. The pandemic put me out of business. I retired penniless (literally). But I'm not starving, not homeless (yet). But I'm happy. And I wouldn't change a thing about the way I practiced. my friend in edmonton alberta, (go oilers BTW) uses waterbed heaters in his barn in sub zero temps for all the smaller animals simply covered with a layer of pond liner for durability and hay and or blankets. Theyre extremely water-proof so theyre ideal and have a large heating area.

just some advice from someone who trains dogs (though not lgds) if you aren't able to manage abbey and do other stuff teather her to a fence or you or even leave her down with the flock, the behavior is fun for her and makes her want to do it more and she could get seriously hurt

ur self deprecation isn't helping with your dog. either make the call to train her properly with outside help or rehome her, or else you're going to end up with an accident eventually

If you can’t dedicate the time to train Abby properly and can’t even get someone to help you here maybe it’s time to officially give her “pet” status and not reinforce her bad habits like a tendency to want to find ways to make you play with her and to chase the animals. Sometimes it seems her jealousy for attention gets the better of her as well and a working dog shouldn’t have this problem.

I think dogs are useful for hog and python hunting which are both invasive species. Both hogs and pythons are killed when they are caught by the dogs. I don't understand why anyone would just hunt bears to harass them. If the bear was a menace bear that breaking into homes or killing livestock and was going to be shot, then hounds would also seem to be acceptable. Hunting on private property with hounds that can endanger livestock on that property is not okay. Hunter's rights should not supersede property rights.

I made my own bucket trap. 1/4 full of water, two bags of fly trap bait and a small funnel in the pour spout that I cut the soft part off. By the end of the season it was almost full of dead flies. Super gross smell but super effective.

my family are first settlers in Vermont. The problem is because people come in and buy up land, turn it into second vacation homes, then they use this to vote in small town politics and screw the people who live there year round over when they need equipment. I have seen this first hand, a small town needed a new plow truck. NOPE a group of flat landers with 3 month homes came in and voted against it because they don't want to pay for it. Not our fault we dont want people coming in and taking over and not even living here.

Vermont local here, I think the thing that bothers me isn’t the implants it’s the tourists that treat vt roads like the mass pike. I’ve never felt as much road rage as I do stuck behind a mass plate camping in the left lane peeping leaves when I’m late for work.

Get 4-5 large rocks, and a masonry drill bit, drill through the rock and build a water system into the rock, so they don't float off of get pushed around, and you can stop having water issues where you can't just turn on the water a couple times a day or so. Rock is stability, rock is life.

just a little tip! cats generally need some form of wet food because they often get urinary infections from not enough hydration, just something to consider!

You can get ceramic heaters for water. Not to take away from any residents, but the canines need it the most since you depend on them so autonomously. I have a cabin with cats and have looked at this myself, even looking at solar reinforced power. Our cats and dogs bring so much more to the table than we realize. We admit to it here and there, but they are our 24 sentries. I hope you look into self sustaining in this area some day.

Have u tried a reverse sump pump with a garden timer, for your watering hole dilemma?

Old time working GSD person here ( herding, police, search & rescue). There are 2 commands that EVERY dog needs to know and they are absolute commands that save lives - human and dogs. The first is the come or here. By absolute I mean they MUST do it immediately on the first command. The second is a down or what we call platz. AND platz means platz until I tell you to do something different. How much easier would your life had been if you could have downed Abbey. It can be a lifesaver so she doesnt take on a s.o.b. mother cow or get you trampled because of her actions. It can prevent a dog from crossing in front of a moving vehicle etc. BUT these 2 commands have a collary - never give a command you can not enforce! Otherwise you are simply reinforcing bad behavior. Your choices here were to put down the camera and go get her and remove her from the situation or tie her to a fence post. You can also have informal commands that are not necessarily enforced. So as an example if my dogs are loose in the backyard and I call them into the house I do not use Hier because they can choose 2 blow me off & i have no way to immediately correct that. Instead I say IN which eventually they become habituated to because they like being with me. A # of people have suggested turning her into a herding dog. Having worked my Shepherds on stock I do not believe that would work. As I commented elsewhere "​@NinSui9653 unlikely guardian dogs are NOT herding dogs. Two very different skill sets. The chase is a guardian skill to chase away predators. She is not sufficiently bonded to her herd/ flocks - was she not ill as a youngster and in the house during bonding period? So her chase instinct is misdirected AND she has been allowed to get away with it wh reinforces it. Chasing and herding are NOT synonymous." Again as noted by other commentators her misdirected chasing in fact could result in a very dangerous situation. Ask any old time farmer - cows can seriously hurt ir kill you. Just a fyi even re the herding. In Germany herding dogs are kept onleash for the first 1-2 years. They are literally tied to their handler. GSDs work very differently than BC and work flocks of 3,000 or more of big merino sheep(350lbs). Similiar to cows you dont want 2b run over by 1 of these nevermind 3k of them.😮😅 Btw I had rightly guessed selenium deficiency . What many do not realize our soils are seriously deficient in a # of minerals due to high input chemical fertilizers and it takes decades of regenerative (old fashioned) farming to bring them back. Selenium is one of the most common. Have you consulted with your county cooperative extension office to find out local issues? They offer a wealth of free information and services. . Finally look up Kit Pharo of Pharo cattle and subscribe to his newsletter and/ or see if he will be speaking in your area in the winter. One of the first to raise grass fed beef but he also pays attention to the genetics of frame size, calving ease, pest resistance etc. Has cows that calve on the open range unassisted for 20years. You can learn a lot for free from his newsletter. Oh also related to calving time. I'm presumimg you are familiar w the arguments to calve w nature i.e. most ruminants calve just as the seasons new grass comes in because that and better weather gives their calves the highest chance of survival. So in Vt I'm presuming that would be around May? Lived a # of years in small Vt town in NE Kingdom. The town budget for May had $ for both snow plowing & grass cutting.😂
